Pregnancy massage

Changes to the body during pregnancy are dramatic, affecting the mother-to-be both physically and psychologically. Increased hormonal activity and the inevitable repositioning of internal organs make many women feel as if their body is ‘out of their control’.

Massage during this time can help to soothe, calm and alleviate some of the many aches and pains that materialise as the weight from the growing child increases.

Benefits of massage during pregnancy

  • Reduces stress, relieves varicose veins and increases blood and lymph circulation, reduces oedema & blood pressure, promotes relaxation, reduces musculoskeletal strain & pain, is revitalizing
  • Assists hormonal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and other physiological processes during pregnancy
  • Contributes to developing flexibility and prepares the body for childbirth
  • Helps transition through emotional support and physical nurturing

Most forms of massage will be suitable or adaptable for massage during pregnancy however it is generally advisable to wait until after the first trimester.

All treatments can be tailored to suit the individual and are carried out on the massage table with the client lying on their side, (with the exception of Indian Head massage where the client sits on a chair). This enables the woman to take the weight off the front of the body without any pressure being transferred to the baby.

Massage also helps in the restoration of pre-pregnancy physiology in the postpartum period.  It augments postural education to minimize the physical and structural stress of carrying and caring for a newborn.
